  • Encouraged by a meteor shower and a period of relative calm, I am inspired to write a haiku.

The Geminids

I’m writing this at about 1am, sitting on my balcony looking out over Mount Kinka during a meteor shower. Facing eastwards, I can see a couple of shooting stars a minute, flashing for a few seconds and then disappearing. I’d probably be able to see lots more if the mountain wasn’t there, but its shadowed outline makes a great backdrop for the show. If I was a poet, I’d be writing a haiku now. Serendipitously, tonight is the clearest it’s been for some time and, although it’s pretty cold now, I can see more stars tonight than I usually can. The fact that there’s only the odd car this time of night in my part of town means that it’s nice and peaceful and I’m in that pleasant state of feeling relaxed and humbled by nature. I’d be happier if I didn’t have to be at work in 9 hours, but you can’t have everything I guess.

Being a Gemini, this probably would have some major impact on my near future if astrologers had anything to do with it, but I don’t really believe in all that stuff so I’ll just content myself with sitting here for a few more minutes and thinking. Though I’m not at all religious, these kind of times, where the natural seems almost supernatural, make me understand why some people believe in higher powers.

Fallen as from grace,
Bursting on a bubble.
Your future written?
